Hi! Hopefully you'll note in my post I also mentioned what you called "pockets of excellence" even in some of Ra's late work, but that it was, OVERALL, a severe decline from most of his 1960's-1970's legacy. If you indeed don't (yet) have "much" of his stuff, I'd recommend focussing on Saturn albums from that era for awhile and compare them to their last albums. The best way to get a grip on any artist's legacy is to examine as much of it as possible in chronological order. This often takes years of collecting and research. With musicians of the depth and scope of Ra and his star players, evolution is discernable and becomes a profile of the artist's personal aesthetic odyssey, a fascinating journey to pursue. The result usually exhibits growth, peaking, and decline, like anything that lives. Some artists seem to "sell out"; others die or quit at their peak; and others may exhibit a "winding down". All I meant was that Ra and the Arkestra seemed to exhibit this "winding down" clearly, from the early 1980's. This wouldn't necessarily be noticeable without a careful survey of the entire career pattern by those who weren't "along for the ride" as it was unfolding, or who haven't studied it "all" in retrospect. It's disappointing for those who were caught up in the swirling depths and transcendental "enlightenment" of what Ra and the Arkestra had been doing with sound for decades, to hear those later, lesser works slowly dominating their readily-available output.
