I've also been fascinated by this dimension of Ra's expression, especially as a reflection of the Sufi word-play tradition (also reflected in Quaballah etc. of course) and the "court-jester" connection. You'll find lots of his records have a certain amount of poetry or recitation, and there's a long radio interview now on CD (sorry, don't have the release data). The films also have excellent spots for analyzing this sort of thing. I'd also suggest tracking down published interviews such as that in "Soundpieces 2: Interviews with American Composers" by Cole Gagne (Scarecrow Press 1993). Ra's wordplay and humor are equally evident, and one can almost hear the rhythm of his speaking when familiar with his style from the records, movies, and radio interview mentioned above.
