Michael Ray and Cosmic Krewe

Last Friday night I caught the first set by Michael Ray and the Cosmic Krewe at Johnny D's Uptown Restaurant & Music Club in scenic Somerville, MA.

!! WOW !!

They swung; they burned; they spaced. They had my feet tapping, my hips swiveling, and my mind somewhere around the Pleiades. And occasionally someone did something which made me laugh out loud with delight. It's hard to remember when the last time was that I've had more fun than this at a club.

Many of the tunes were, I'm sure, Ra compositions, although I recognized only two for sure: Dancing Shadows (yes!) and Enlightenment. The latter was a real delight. It began with one chorus played at a dirge-like tempo, with wonderful growling trumpet part by Michael Ray using a plunger mute, before taking off at a brisk, delightful pace, with great vocals by Michael interspersed. Throughout the set, Michael proved that he is as effective a vocalist as he is trumpet player. He invoked Sonny's name quite often. Near the end of the first number, he chanted about "Angels and Demons"; in another section he declaimed about "Tone scientists, masters of discipline"; the final number referred to "ancestors" and contained the line "They will come back in ships of gold". I'm hoping that these clues will help those of you who are more knowledgeable than me identify some of these tunes for me.

They played one song which was a fairly straightforward New Orleans blues march, with Michael invoking "the Second Line". I finally understood why the group is named Cosmic Krewe (duh !).

The group consisted of Michael on trumpet, synth/organ, and vocals, an electric pianist, another Ra alumnus (Cecil Brooks ?) on trumpet, an alto player (he was my favorite), a bass player who played both electric fretless stand-up and standard electric bass, a drummer, and a percussionist. The horn players and the bass player all occasionally used echo or other electronic effects, but the sound still retained an organic, non-fusionish quality. Every player was top-notch.

Bob Blumenthal's column previewing the show in the Globe mentioned that the group consists of players from New Orleans and Vermont, certainly a surprising combination. It also mentioned Don Glasgo's, a SATURN list member, interactions with Michael at Dartmouth.

I'd encourage any readers of this list to make sure that they see this group if they come anywhere near you. It may not match the full power of the Arkestra, but Sun Ra's music is certainly alive and well and in good hands with this group of musicians.
