I've been looking at all the contributions about poetry and archiving, I found it quite difficult to sort out all the different ideas that have been raised. Anyway, here are my reactions, for what they're worth. I intend to follow up later with listings of what poems are in one or two of the earlier editions.

Republish or not?

I like Peter Hinds approach in publishing Sun Ra - all the benefit goes to Gilmore and the Arkestra. In reality, not much if any money would get to the Arkestra as a result of putting the poetry on an ftp site. If a major proportion of the poetry were to be republished, I'd prefer to see Peter or someone else like minded creating a new paper edition, at least in the short to medium term while there are still Arkestra musicians stranded financially by Ra's intestacy.

On the other hand, now or later, a few selected poems distributed on the net either as text or as Web pages with graphics might be a good thing - it could only serve to raise interest in Ra and the Arkestra.

One final thought: some of the Immeasurable Equation editions date from 1972. How long does copyright last on printed material? Is it uniform worldwide?

Net Archives.

I suspect that electronic archives depend on support and funding from organisations just as much as paper ones - and they wouldn't necessarily have more permanence. In any case, we already have an electronic archive, namely the hearn listserver! It's very accessible, much more so than a paper archive, and it exists. You can't reach it by ftp as far as I know, but you can via gopher, and you can fetch all of it by email if you haven't got interactive access. Admittedly it's not perfect: a heady mixture of poetry, discography, news, discussion (and some stray private mail!) is hardly a relational database. However, given the gopher access, some index or search facilities are possible, and there would be nothing to stop anyone who was creating a Web page from putting in links to the individual items in the listserver archives. Maybe I'm wrong, but it doesn't seem too difficult to build on what we've got.

Listing poetry.

Whatever the copyright situation turns out to be (less than simple, I expect, since some Immeasurable Equation issues were coprighted by Ihnfinity Inc/Saturn Research, and others by Le Sony'r Ra), whether it's seen as irrelevant or not, and however the discussion over archives is resolved: we can always start off now, making the equivalent of a discography - simply listing the poems we know of to see how many there are, and where they were published. Basically I think I agree with Steve Albertson, as to how this sort of thing could be organised, and wih Vladimir about its worth. Ideal work for a group like the Saturn list: many more people can get involved, and exchange information much faster than would be possible without the internet. There's nobody better placed than us to do it.
