"sun ra" is now a fashion term

from http://www.thefader.com/2011/02/14/grammys-trash-talk-is-cee-lo-the-best...

"look at his get up from last night’s Grammy’s. Aside from his Sun
Ra-ish bejeweled shower cap,"

from http://www.thefader.com/2011/02/14/at-the-grammys-justin-bieber-fans-att...

"by Cee-Lo, who appeared with Muppets in a Sun Ra/Dr. John/Peacock ensemble."

both pages have some pics of the outfit. unfortunately, the video has
been pulled, so if anyone has a backdoor version, pass along the link!

well, if the people who wrote those were old enough they'd have realized that cee-lo's get up was pure elton john circa 1974. possibly a direct copy, down to the glasses. probably the wrong forum to admit this, but elton john's goodbye yellow brick road tour was my first concert. he opened the show wearing that suit. elton's had lights inside and the whole suit lit up.

i guess it's cool to see Sunny name-dropped in the almost mainstream media though.

the 'sun ra' look is now all the rage in soho:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/03/fashion/03CRITIC.html?_r=1&src=twrhp
Alexander Wang’s Store Opens in SoHo

I saw a woman who was a classic specimen of the Yamamoto
tribe: neon hair, architectural glasses, a huge coat that looked like
something Frank Gehry erected out of sleeping bags. I hoped she was
getting back part of her lost world: honeydew- and cantaloupe-colored
caftans in parachute silk with metallic tape details that would work
equally well on Grace Jones or the Sun Ra Arkestra ($695); mint-green
metallic disco jackets with rose gold zippers ($625).

similarly we see bands all over the place playing various forms of space music -- but remember, Sun Ra did say he was laying the ground work for the twentyFIRST century and, well, here we are!

I fully expect someday I will tune in the periodical video display device with my grandkids and there will be some silly kiddies show and one of the alien-looking hosts will say, "Let me tell you about my home planet, Saturn."
