5 hours of Sun Ra Radio Tonight!

I just read that a New Orleans radio station is broadcasting 5 hours or Mr Ra tonight starting at 10pm CST (UTC/GMT -6 hours).

There is a button for streaming the station in the upper left corner of their page.

5 hours of Sun Ra Radio Tonight!

So, did anyone get to check out the broadcast?  It's not every day a station sets aside 5 hours for Mr Ra...

I listened to most of it.  The DJ said that they have a Sun Ra show twice each year - around New Years and again at 'solstice.'

No Ra-velations last night but it sure was nice to listen to someone sharing their enthusiasm and favorite tunes.   It didn't compare with Charles Blass' shows, though.  Wasn't even close.  I'm looking forward to May in hopes that WKCR will host another set or two.  What do you think, Charles?  Will it happen?  Maybe?

5 hours of Sun Ra Radio Tonight!

Hi John
I am on sabbatical from WKCR and New York/USA, although it is possible I will soon have a monthly program here in Zurich, which would also be streaming.  In that event, you can be sure that Sun Ra would be featured regularly.

Regarding WKCR, anyone could write to the Jazz and New Music Departments,
jazz@wkcr.org
and
newmusic@wkcr.org
as well as the Board

board@wkcr.org
and express your wishes...

Space,
C

PS  I'm curious who does the cover of Dreaming?

I knew you were 'out of town' but I guess I was just hoping... Please let us know if/when you start your new show!

It was by a New Orleans trio called The Tin Men - washboard, sousaphone, and guitar.  I found their website - looks like they played in NYC recently.

Sun Ra Radio

well, since we're talking radio, I've been doing a freeform show for about 20 years on WCBN-FM, ann arbor.  I'm on friday mornings 6-9am EST and feature heavily the artists we've been discussing recently: FZ, Captain Beefheart, the Residents, Ornette Coleman, George Clinton and of course plenty of Sun Ra.  it's a bit different every week and entirely unplanned. Based on Charles' comments, last week I did a Capt. Beefheart vs. Prime Time set, alternating tunes for about 35-40 minutes. over the years, I've done a number of Sun Ra specials and will certainly do so in the future.  the show tends to be mostly instrumental, but you're likely to hear just about anything.

we stream at www.wcbn.org  if you're interested.  please pardon the self-plug.

Sun Ra Radio

Hey, I'm glad for the info, Sean!  Another reason to love Fridays!  I just tuned in and am enjoying a li'l Darkstar now.  I only wish I had known earlier so I could have checked out the Beefheart/Ornette show.

5 hours of Sun Ra Radio

I listened for a couple of hours before bedtime, I own most of the albums, but it was still nice to hear someone else playing Ra instead of me. I hadn't heard some of those Ra cover songs before though, I liked the cover of Dreaming.

"Your brain is simply wired to a nostalgic sense of audio distortion. You hear warmth, you think you hear grandeur, space, subtlety, all these things . . . but actually you're just satisfying an old recording in your brain." -Daniel Richler on vinyl.
