I don't know the history of these or any other Leo tapes, but on the subject of whether Marshall gets paid for these recordings or if the UK royalties for this or that goes elsewhere, in the case of the notorius financial-planning philosophy of the Arkestra, I think we need to show a bit more leniency than perhaps whether to pay Paul McCartney or Michael Jackson for Hey Jude ;)

I was pondering of this the other day while browsing the AstroBlack forums and thinking, y'know, it's not fair, it's just not fair how a very large and truly disproportionately large part of "cleaning up after" the wake of Sun Ra was left to a disproportionately small number of people.

Sonny's sister for example, Marshall's father and the people who covered the phone bills, the people who were given concert tapes in lieu of the cash for airplane tickets or other outrageous expenses the Arkestra was said to leave in it's wake. All these kind people put cash, often very substantial cash, out of their own pockets right when it was needed, and they were handed back something of precious sentimental and often unestimable human value, but for all intents and purposes economically unviable and worthless. Like when a child spends hours on a painting and hands it to you, you have to accept this gift as payment, but it has dubious next-quarter investment potential ;)

I mean that in a good way :)

All those people were angels. The Business Types would call them Angel Investors, only they weren't after any investment in their own RRSP, they were investing in our collective RRSP, the future wealth and sustainance support of the human beings of the future.

Shouldn't they be rewarded for their faith in Sun Ra's message? And if what they have is a concert tape, shouldn't they be permitted to recoup that air-fare or hotel tab or phone bill or whatever, even recoup it a thousand times over? Because at that moment they and they alone had that faith enough in the Arkestra to part with their own coin way beyond the cost of some concert swag. The money didn't come from the "cosmos", it didn't just appear from magic, it wasn't "spare money". It came willingly and selflessly from the pockets of people with families to feed and bills to pay, people just like you and me.

Back at AstroBlack, or where ever might be best, I would love to see an honour roll enumerating these all these Arkestra Angels both to thank them for giving us all this gift from their past, and also to inspire all of us to do the same should someday we find ourselves in their shoes.
