I subscribe to another list via digest (not this one) and am continually amazed at the selfishness and lack of consideration of people who reply with the whole digest appended. Closing the list won't do anything about that. I find that spam, which I hate, is a tiny annoyance compared with those jerks.

Most spam is generated automatically by programs that harvest addresses from mailing lists or databases of addresses sold by spammers. So if the list is closed, spamming will probably dry up.

Those two considerations point in opposite directions. I would probably prefer to keep it open but don't feel super strongly either way.

Oh, one more thing. My ISP has a web page where I can check my email and send email from my regular address when away from my computer. All I need is access to the Internet & my password. I know that many other ISPs have this feature. So if your ISP has this sort of capability, closing the list will not prevent you from participating when not at home/office. There are also some third party sites which provide similar functions, so theoretically, eveyone should be able to do this. I suspect that AOL probably messes it up in some way since that seems to be their corporate philosophy.
