Super-quick answer: Cymbals/Crystal spears/Pathways/Friendly love are firmly and squarely on the outside end of the spectrum, very abstract, often introspective, always darkly beautiful. There are some processional bluesy-type organ pieces on "Cymbals" (notably "Thoughts under a dark blue light" and "The order of the pharaonic jesters") but most of the music is less "groove"-oriented and more abstract (I almost said "free"). A lot of it is pretty heavily percussion-laden.
That being said, I think you'd be depriving yourself if you didn't get both of these. There's excellent trumpet playing from Kwame Hadi and Akh Tal Ebah, brilliant (as usual) playing from John Gilmore, excellent work from Ronnie Boykins, and wonderful keyboard and arranging from Ra. This music is utterly sublime and rewarding. Most of it too is more of a small ensemble than "big band"--think "Other planes of there," with a wide cast of characters but only a few on stage at a time.
I think I'm right on this: the Japanese compilation was totally different. The Evidence greatest hits CD is a totally new selection. The track listing can be found on CDNow at http://www.cdnow.com/ http://www.cdnow.com/ .
Hope this helps. You really should get Cymbals and Pathways.

Although I am open to the more abstract works like Atlantis and Magic City, my preference is for the late Chicago/early NY discs like Angel&Demons/Nubians and FateMood/SunComes. Lanquidity is great -insidious moody grooves, to paraphrase a couple of posts, while AngelsSpeakLove leans more to the outside. Would anyone care to comment on the placement of Cymbals/CrystalSpears and Pathways/FriendlyLove within a big band/inside --- abstract/outside spectrum? Also, since it hasn't been posted on our MUZE yet, I would most appreciate a track listing for the Greatest Hits package. Hasn't this been available as a Japanese import? Any feelings about the desirability of these versions? Sound quality somewhat consistent? Thanks, Michael
