Sistas Place celebrates 5years, John Coltrane,

Sistas' Place, 456 Nostrand Avenue, at Jefferson Avenue, in the People's Republic of Brooklyn, is celebrating its 5th anniversary. The official beginning of the celebration was a highly spirited and dynamic show on Sunday, September 17, with Atiba Nkululeko Kwabena & Songhai Djeli.

The celebration continues on Thursday, September 21, at 8:00 PM with Poet Louis Reyes Rivera's Jazzoets featuring Ahmed Abdullah, Atiba Nkululeko Kwabena, Lenard Hebert, Ngoma, and Quintin Franklin.

Friday, September 22, at 9 and 10:30PM will be a special presentation by Ibrahim Gonzalez and his Latin Jazz Quintet. Also on that day, Louis Reyes Rivera will speak on the meaning of Grito de Lares.

September 23 commemorates el Grito de Lares, the 1868 Revolt of Lares, Puerto Rico, the first manifestation of Puerto Rican Nationalism. It also commemorates the joint efforts of Puerto Rican and Cubans to abolish slavery, establish sovereignty and lay the foundation for a united Caribbean which manifested in Cuba as the 10 Year's War 1868-1878.

Saturday, September 23, at 9 and 10:30 PM, Sistas' Place will proudly bring the great alto saxophonist Gary Bartz, back to Brooklyn, in a quartet setting, as the culmination of the week-long celebration.
