he had much to say about miles though and i'd like to paraphrase for its interest and humor. the interviewer asked what he thought of miles's current work as miles was being further entrechned in rock music. mingus replied querriously, isn't miles dead? the interviewer was taken aback, for this is when miles was probably at his most popular with the mainstream, and the interviewer asserted, no, he's actually very popular these days. mingus reflected, i went to a concert that they said was miles davis - i walked in and saw a man on the stage playing a silver horn with wires hanging out of it and he was surrouinded by naked white women and white musicians -i said that's not miles! miles loved music - that man on the stage loved money.

although, this is the same Mingus who once wrote to Miles:

I know you're making a comeback, Miles, and I'm with you more than you know. You're playing the greatest Miles I've ever heard, and I'm sure you already know that you're one of America's truly great jazz stylists. You're often fresh in a creative sense and, if anything, you underevaluate yourself--on the outside--and so with other associates in the art. Truly, Miles, I love you and want you to know you're needed here, but you're too important a person in jazz to be less than extra careful about what you say about other musicians who are also trying to create....

that was written in 11/55, but is it less true of 70's Miles? Bringing it back to Ra, Ayler, etc., what makes his "not enough info" answer to the "avant garde" question less disingenuous?

thinking onm it now - its interesting that while mingus was unwilling to brandish avant garde jazz - which he never had a problem doing in the past - he was all set to show some contempt at fushion.

Mingus' open letter to Miles closes:

Why did you continue to record, session after session, when you now say you don't like them except for two LPs? I wonder if you forgot the names of those tunes; also, how a true artist can allow all this music, which even he himself doesn't like, to be sold to the jazz public. Or even accept payment for a job which you yourself say wasn't well done.

he was talking about Miles' then-recent dismissal of his work during the previous two years, but it's rhetorical: who more than Charles Mingus understands the role of self-mythologizing in any notion of jazz "celebrity"? Well, Sun Ra, I suppose understood this the most, but Mingus is way up there. And, in the early 70's, Miles Davis was also way up there.
