Dear Friends,

While the effusive sentiment of Ms. Davis is no doubt sincere, the

arabesque leaps of faith that must be made fall beyond the grasp of the average gymnast or even their more sedate cousins,that innocent woodland creature known as the record collector. How is anyone buying a bunch of old records at a yard sale in Dubuque or from a rare vinyl dealer in Paris to really know whether the musicians on the records were adequately compensated? The utterly presposterous amount of research to determine this answer for each person on even one album is a monumentally staggering thought. So, while I appreciate the tone of Olympian distaste employed by Ms.Davis her suggestions are as always akin to those mystics who would pass an elephant through the eye of a needle by using a pair of tweezers and a telescope oriented the wrong way...

Dear James Demby & like~minded Saturn~list members, To answer your question about what you should do to compensate the musicians if you're involved in buying, selling, or exchanging recordings (bootleg or not) for which the musicians have not been compensated, I've already said what I think you should do: Send a check in equal amount to what you spent or received to Marshall Allen, Sun Ra's House, 5626 Morton St., Philadelphia 19144-1330. If you do this, then I personally will have no quarrel with you, & if you don't do it, it's on your conscience. As you wrote, "If I buy any legitimate Sun Ra CD, the Arkestra receives nothing, if I buy the vinyl boots, the Arkestra receives nothing.... The music business is evil by its nature. It exploits the artist! It always has and it will probably continue." No, it doesn't have to continue that way if we take responsibility for changing it. Langston Hughes wrote "Justice deferred is justice denied," but we are free to correct our ways so that justice can still prevail. If sending a check to Maestro Marshall Allen forces the proceeds to others down, all to the better. I also think people who love the music should hasten to purchase, preferably from the band (though it appears that may not be foolproof either), recordings that are being made & issued by the Arkestra now, & I think people should support the Arkestra by buying tickets for the concerts whenever they can. The joy received from being there is worth a thousand times the ticket price, & the ticket price helps the Arkestra keep on, & buying Arkestra recordings directly at the concerts helps still more.
