    Hi!  I'm writing to announce that - at long last - my book "VENUS

REVEALED: A New Look Below the Clouds of our Mysterious Twin Planet" is finally finished and printed. As some of you know, its been a long hard road, but I'm quite pleased with the result.

    The book is a cultural and natural history of Venus, including

history, mythology, gender, politics and lots of science. I discuss how studying Venus can help us more wisely manage our Earth, and I present some devil's advocate arguments for the possibility of life on Venus. I've also included some personal anecdotes about growing up in the space age and the effect that this had on the consciousness of my g- g- generation. Of course the whole thing is sprinkled with rock and roll lyrics and attempts at humor.     The purpose of this e-mail is twofold - to announce the arrival of

the book to my friends, and also to seek your help in a grassroots effort to not have it totally ignored. I've been learning a bit about the politics of book selling and it's definitely an uphill battle for an unknown author. If they order it at all, bookstores will bury a book like mine in the science section - even though it's specifically written for people who DON'T frequent the science section. The way that books get featured in "New Nonfiction", or displayed prominently on the main floor of a store is that publishers pay extra money for this shelf space. (It reminds me a bit of the "payola" scams on radio.) It's very hard for an unknown to get any visibility. My publisher has basically told me that, in spite of some rave advance reviews, they won't bother to put any resources into marketing my book unless they get early indications of a lot of demand and interest. (Gee, it's nice to have their support...) A catch-22: no sales without visibility, no visibility without sales.

    So, if you want you can help me by doing two things.  First, call

your local bookstore(s) a few times (or a zillion times if you're bored or zealous) and ask for the book. Or stop in and ask if they have it if you're passing by. Second, if you do check out the book and you like it, please forward this e-mail to anyone who you think might be interested in knowing about the book. Its hard to say, but its possible that the collective effort of a hundred people might make a difference. And then if, against huge odds, it IS a best-seller, I'll take you all on a sea cruise!
