A newly discovered weird-o Saturn LP!

Hi all,

I'm happy to announce that another Saturn LP has been discovered by = that intrepid collector, Gilbert Hsiao. The disc is titled "The Coleman = Sociophonic Reading Design for All Ages." Saturn LP 784, 1968, with the = Chicago Saturn address. Gilbert's copy was without a jacket, but the disc = itself indicates that there should be some flash cards or other printed = material for teacher use accompanying it. The Sociophonic Sytem was = developed by Ms. Ethel N.L. Coleman for "the pre school class, for the = remedial pupil, for the student tutor, for the adult literacy program, for = the bi-lingual classes, and for high school and college levels," and she = reads the instructions and exercises contained on the disc, and, in spots, = sings the exercises as ditties.=20 As Gilbert put it, "I am glad I did not learn to read using this = method. It gives me a headache to listen to." As I put it, "It's = completely insane." No musical content beyond the bizarre singing by Ms. = Coleman. See the Saturn Trading List if you're interested in signing up = for the inevitable vine.=20 As a Saturn release, it's not all that strange to see an educational = record issued. Sun Ra and his Chicago circle all believed strongly in the = importance and power of education. And it fits with the tradition Saturn = partakes of as exemplified in various parts of the book "Black Sounds" by = and some of the early "uplifting" records issued by the first Black-owned = commercial label, Black Swan (1921-23). This Saturn was almost certainly handled completely by Alton Abraham = working with the inner circle of Saturn. Saturn 783 was the Tagalog single = by Dimpna B. Clarin, released around the same time, also done without any = known Ra involvement.
