For some three years, before Sun Ra left the planet, I performed Sun Ra poetry with the Arkestra. Since then, I have been performing Tributes to Sun Ra, all over the USA, on radio programs, at Festivals, with local musicians, the Earshot Festival in Seattle. Also, all over Europe.

What is the poetry all about? Sun Ra felt he and the Arkestra were a Race of Angels, messengers from God, linking man with God. Hildegard von Bingen of the 12th Century classifies angels as closest to God, and then a hierarchy down to the last layer closest to man.

There has been much literature these days, at Borders and elsewhere, on Angels. Angels are sold in every bazaar in the world. The Old Testament has an angel visit Abraham and Sarah to predict that Sarah, in her very old age, would bare him a son.

I have been collecting Sun Ra poetry some six years. Hartmet Geerkin wrote the extraordinary book on Sun Ra, with the most carefully codified collection of Sun Ra poetry.

I feel it interesting that the poetry that we have of Sun Ra, is carefully typed, indexed, and ready for publication. I personally consider him one of our great 20th Century poets, philosophers, with a deep knowledge of science.

Albert North Whitehead, a great scientist has said that in order to understand science, one should read Plato and Wordsworth. I think that Sun Ra's name should be added to that list.

I happen to love this poem. By the way, Wem Wenner, great German film maker, did a fascinating film: Wings of Desire. Angels from heaven wanted to be humans and came down to earth. In the film, there was an interesting line that somehow they recognized each other.

The Buddhists have their asperas, the Christians have their angels, and the Jews mention angels throughout the Old Testament as messengers.

I have found it interesting that the world over, angels have not only wings, but also play some musical instrument! Whether we believe in them or not, they are all over the globe, messengers, always supposed to be our guardians, always with musical instruments.

I am so happy that the list is now thinking about Sun Ra poetry. I am hoping that James Wolfe and others will at least put the poetry out on the Internet, as we have discussed for years and years! Surely, with so many of you in academia, Sun Ra poetry can be included in Contem- porary poetry, right in your own institutions. Just let the Professor introduce the students to the poetry. And let them decide what it's all about.
