Ebonic Tones or Colored Sounds is the latest evolution in the search trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah has pursued for a sound rooted in the culture of African American people. The musicians in this ensemble have been chosen because of their dedication to developing a distinctive sound on their instruments. As a result of that pursuit they have all garnered enough individual attention as leaders on their own. As an ensemble, their coming together is an event!

The rooted music of the band covers a vast array of styles and genres while keeping the audience engaged. Ebonic Tones was formed last year and has received rave reviews since its inception.

Ahmed Abdullah, a noted trumpeter, composer/arranger, educator, organizer and bandleader, made a committment a few years back to collaborate with like minded people in order to make Brooklyn a viable community for the most adventurous music possible. Billy Bang is a violinist who has created a sound that goes beyond the instrument and goes to the heart of what this music is about. Mr. Bang recently has been acknowledged as a great composer with the release of his "Vietman, the Aftermath" on Justin Time Records. His work is always stimulating and inspired.

Alex Blake is one of the most powerful bassist living today. He is virtually a one man rhythm section as he sings and strums in that very infectious and recognizable style. He has worked with the top names in the music. On his latest cd as a leader, Now's the Time, brings together Pharoah Sanders and John Hicks.

Alex Harding plays the baritone sax from top to bottom with the kind of sound that immediately lets you know that something is happening. Since his arrival to New York less than ten years ago he has earned a well-deserved reputation as a important musician to call on if one wants fireworks on the bandstand. Andrei Strobert has been working as an artist, musician and educator for more than 30 years. He is always in demand and has worked as a drummer in numerous ensembles. His current position of 30 years as a Adjunct Professor at Medgar Evers College is another one of the many endeavors Mr. Strobert has accomplished. Besides his own ensemble that he co-leads with his brother Ricardo, Andrei has recorded with people like Abdullah Ibrahim, Dr Makanda Ken McIntyre and Craig Harris, to name a few.
