Electric guitar did not become an important part of the Arkestral lineup till the late 1970s. Back in Chicago, Sunny occasionally used BeBop Sam Thomas, who appears on one released track (the single "Great Balls of Fire"). In New York in 1962, Sunny made a couple of sessions with Calvin Newborn. But no other guitarist was heard on an Arkestra recording until that gonzo individual known only as Sly appeared on several tracks in 1974, and toured with the band.

Guitarists became a regular part of the band in 1978 when Dale Williams joined (he actually lived in the House of Ra for a while). Williams and another guitarist known only as "Disco Kid" are quite prominent on the Lanquidity album. In 1979 Sunny was mostly using Skeeter McFarland and Taylor Richardson, who appeared on several Saturn albums as well as Strange Celestial Road. (Strange Celestial Road was recorded at Variety Recording Studios in New York City, in mid-June 1979.)

McFarland stuck around till 1981, by which time Sunny was starting to use Carl LeBlanc. Bruce Edwards seems to have begun his tenure with the Arkestra in 1984.

As far as I know, there were no vibists in the Arkestra until 1970, when Rashid Salim played the vibes in the humongous Arkestra that performed at the Fondation Maeght concert. William Morrow played vibes on the 1971 European tour. And Sun Ra developed a liking for the electronic vibes sound on one of his keyboards--it can be heard on some 1972 and 1973 recordings. Damon Choice first worked with the Arkestra during the Bay Area tour at the end of 1974, but did not become a regular till 1978. Thereafter he was the Arkestra's main vibist, though from 1978 to 1980 Harry Wilson was often there as well.

I'm not counting Sun Ra's old friend Walt Dickerson, who sat in at least once with the Arkestra in 1978 (and most likely on other occasions).

Since The Earthly Recordings was published, I've been able to firm up the date on Strange Celestial Road, and identify the vibist on the December 11, 1974 tape as Damon Choice. The tape with Dickerson sitting in is a recent addition as well. Everything else is in the published edition.
