This UK CD is currently getting excellent reviews and has high visibility: it has star billing in this month's Wire, and was presented as "CD of the week" in The Guardian last Friday - a billing which transcends cateory in that newspaper, which generally reviews under Pop, Jazz, Classical, Roots, etc. labels.

The whole of the title track from Sun Ra's 1972 "Space Is The Place" Blue Thumb LP is included - I believe that this to be its only CD release to date. Sun Ra's track is not just the focal point of the music here: his influence pervades the whole anthology as one of the sources of inspiration for the other musicians.

All the tracks are taken from 1970s recordings, of varying degrees of obscurity. Sanders' track was on Impulse, most of the others are from self-financed labels such as Reid's Mustevic Sound. Interesting and excellent. The liner notes are more detailed than you might expect from such an anthology, both as regards the original issues of the recordings and the artists themselves.
