I grew up in baltimore in the seventies, where a really great grass-roots organization presented all-ages concerts on sunday afternoons: The Left bank Jazz Society. Ra began playing there twice a year on a regular basis beginning in Oct. 76 In the fall of 77 a concert was scheduled as a live recording session: Sun Ra, Gilmore, Clifford Jordan, plus bass and drums: Wilbur Campbell and Bill Lee. The date was s'posed to be released on muse. ( a kind-of "blowin' in from chicago" reunion) Well, as these things happen something fell through......neither Ra nor Gilmore made it, and their subs were Muhal Richard Abrams and Charles Davis. the exact date was 10-30-77.

further to the last thread about ra and other pianists, i had a nice long chat with jay mcshann and was very surprised to hear all the kind words he had for ra. of course mcshann exudes genorosity and a true love of music. what was equally intruiging were his art tatum stories. now certainly ra must have appreciated art tatum, are there any stories along these lines. on another note: i have heard rumours about pianists who have offered to hold the piano seat with the arkestra (names like muhal and byard), any truth to these? wouldnt it be interesting to hear such a session. both the forementioned would obviously bring a lot of wide spread taste to the positon howard
