Sistas' Place/Onaje Allan Gumbs in a Tribute to MLK!/Saturday,
Sistas' Place, 456 Nostrand Avenue at Jefferson Avenue (where Jazz:=C2= =A0 A=20 Music of the Spirit Lives and Culture is a Weapon), presents=C2=A0Onaje= Allan=20 Gumbs' Group in a Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King. Showtimes at 9 and= =20 10:30pm.=20 =20
With each passing year, the genius and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King= =20 becomes more and more obvious and likewise with Onaje Allan Gumbs, the= =20 breadth and scope of his musicality becomes more transparent with time.= It is=20 therefore a wonderful fit that the composer of Dare to Dream should hono= r the=20 life of one who is known to have had a dream or two.=20 =20
Dr. King in his opening address to the Berlin Jazz Festival of 1964=20 demonstrated his wisdom of the importance of Jazz: A Music of the Spirit= to=20 world. These are excerpts from his speech:=20 =20 "Jazz speaks for life. The Blues tell the story of life's difficulties,= =20 and if you think for a moment, you will realize that they take the harde= st=20 realities of life and put them into music, only to come out with some ne= w=20 hope or sense of triumph. This is triumphant music. "=20 =20
"Much of the power of our Freedom Movement in the United States has come= =20 from this music. It has strengthened us with its sweet rhythms when cour= age=20 began to fail. It has calmed us with its rich harmonies when spirits wer= e=20 down. " =20
"And now Jazz is exported to the world. For in the particular struggle= of=20 the Negro in America there is something akin to the universal struggle= of=20 modern man. Everybody has the Blues. Everybody longs for meaning. Everyb= ody=20 needs to love and be loved. Everybody needs to clap hands and be happy.= =20 Everybody longs for faith. In music, especially this broad category call= ed=20 Jazz, there is a stepping stone towards all of these."=20 =20 Do come out and hear a Tribute to Martin Luther King by a master=20 musician, Onaje Allan Gumbs, in the environment where Jazz: A Music of= the Spirit=20 was created.
