Hey folks, I'm moving to Chicago in a few weeks and will (at least temporarily) lose internet access. I've been kicking around an idea about some sort of co-op record/cd label with proceeds to help out the arkestra and Mr. Ra's family. Of course, this would not be an easy thing to do. It appears that Evidence is only going to do one more reissue due to the legal tangles caused by the lack of a will, etc.

Anyway, my idea is as follows. Maybe folks on the Saturn list (and other folks) could form a co-op record label to produce recordings of the Arkestra from existing tapes (there are so many live tapes - some of which actually sound good and have good material - that getting the material should be fairly easy). These recordings could be sold through Cadence or other distributors and also given to the Arkestra so they could sell them. Proceeds, of course, would go to the band and the family (maybe a 50/50 split). The problems are many - would the band and family both agree to this sort of thing? Are there some legal ramifications that I don't know about? We'd need someone to be a liaison between the band and family and the record co., someone to do the editing, mastering, production, etc. Another question is, with the current glut of Sun Ra material out now on disc, would the sales even be enough to make any substantial money?

Anyway, I'm not sure of the feasability of such an operation or if anyone else thinks it would be a good idea. I'm just trying to think of ways to get much needed cash to the band and family who need it and maybe get some Ra gems out to the public too.
