Another unknown Ra concert

As luck would have it, I received a copy of the June 29, 1984 concert at Carnegie Hall from Ahmed Abdullah just a few days after it was mentioned here. And Ahmed didn't tell me he was going to send it...

I understand Barry MacRae's lack of enthusiasm for the Arkestra's set a little better now. The program is absolutely standard for the 1984 and the performances are pretty standard too. The limitation to one hour probably didn't help. The Arkestra played with a lot more fire and inventiveness in Philly four weeks earlier (I'm still looking for a tape of Afro-American Cultural Museum, 6/1/84--any leads out there?). Most of the concert tapes from 1984 that I've heard are better--and Live at Praxis is much superior to this set.

The sonic perspective is strange. It's the brass section's view of things. Abdullah must have put the tape machine right next to him, so the brass and electric bass and the drums come through clearly, Ra's piano is OK, but the saxes and Ra's vocals are heard coming back up from the hall. (The only exception is during Marshall's feature, but Marshall's a throwback to the days when Hawk played without a microphone and could be heard halfway down the block on 52nd Street) Good if you want to analyze Ra's brass section writing but not too rewarding otherwise.
