I was at this concert. It was not one of the really huge ones on the Great Lawn (?) but part of the Summerstage series which is in a smaller clearing. On the other hand, there certainly were a hell of a lot of people there, maybe as many as 20,000? Somebody undoubtedly taped it as it is easy to sneak a tape recorder into one of these concerts if you want but I wouldn't expect much of the quality of the tape - probably tons of audience noise. You never know, a tape off the board might exist somewhere. In fact, I suppose a person with "researcher credentials" such as RLC could ask the Summerstage people. As Summerstage is a continuing series there might be someone who knows if tapes were made. Maybe Sonic Youth have one.

The Arkestra's performance was good but this was not one of the great concerts, imho (though I regret to say it's the only time I saw Sun Ra and the Arkestra); the Ra was partially incapacitated - his piano playing was to some extent the suggestion of his sound rather than a realization of it (If that makes any sense to you). Wait, I take it back, actually, June Tyson was there, playing the violin and singing, swirling her cape about the stage, and she was amazing. Thinking of that now makes me wish I had a tape of the show ... She was such a presence that I can hardly believe she passed so soon afterwards.

There was an additional element of excitement, tension, and nervous energy (and poignance in retrospect) added by the colocation of artists like Sun Ra and Sonic Youth performing to the public, in New York, on Independence Day (if that's what it really is) in what seemed to be a particularly portentuous election year.
