Fellow Saturnites, Hello. I'm currently writing my masters thesis, which is on the subject of jazz and quasi-religious and messianic movements. From the outset, Sun Ra has been one of the focal points of my study. Basically, what I'm trying to do is to discover why there have been (relatively) so many jazz/quasi-religious movements. In particular,

Dave, I have to get ready for my tour, but before I leave, I want to tell you that Coltrane has been made a "saint", an he is born=again Christine. The do Bible work from the New Testament, house homeless, feed the hungry, and there is a three hour servicre with the minister playing the sax, and musicians playing Coltrane sta+ndards. It is an unbelievable experience. I read Sun Ra poetry during the service.

Sun Ra, a biblical scholar, took a different position on the Bible.

I'm focusing on three musicians: Sun Ra, John Coltrane, and rhythm and blues singer King Pleasure, who, though now known only for "Moody's Mood for Love," in 1960 authored a philosophy that he called Planetism, which he claimed would free humanity from death and disease. As far as Sun Ra goes, I'm interested in anything having to do with the ideological dimension of his music, as well as his poetry and any other media that he used. I've gotten some help from Trudy Morse, but I'm still in search of several things: 1) Some kind of summary of Sun Ra's philosophy. While I've gotten the general gist of it from song lyrics and liner notes, I don't have much that I can cite as being specifically expounded by Sun Ra. 2)Any info on how the music fitted into the message, including the role of the Arkestra and Ra's prolific recordings in spreading the word, so to speak. 3)Definitive info on Sun Ra's influences, especially philosophical and mystical. Well, I guess that's not several things, but it seems like a lot. Basically what I want to do is to give Sun Ra's philosopphies the same kind of anthropoligcal study that is given to other movements. Any information, comments, or questions would be gladly appreciated.
