      "Myth and Reality" - Mircea Eliade, 1963.
        This  book  has problems, mostly relating to  its date, but  it
      also  has  a  few  killer insights on  the  relation between  the
      structures of myth and reality, especially on  the  idea  of  the
      "living myth". I  would not  be surprised if  this  is  one Sunny
      read. Its problems are of the usual anthropological, evolutionist
      kind,  i.e. assuming that "primative" cultures are embodiments of
      the pasts of "higher civlizations" and other such blunders of the
      time.  The vocabulary is academic, but  not jargoned. Of interest
      to those looking into just what the hell  Sun  Ra  was getting at
      with his proclamtions of mythocracy.

      "God's Children" - Archibald Rutledge, 1947.
         In  his Master's Thesis on  Sun Ra, Allan Chase refers to this
      book, though he or Sunny garbled the author. Sun Ra told him that
      this book  and "Search Light on  the Bible and Seventh Day X-Ray"
      by Boston Napoleon Boyd were very important books to him. I could
      undersatand Sun  Ra's atraction to Boyd. This  one  is  much more
      odd. Rutlegde  was  a  White southern mid-brow poet  and  writer.
      "God's Children" today would be taken, in many ways correctly, as
      racist to  the core. Basically, it's about how "his Negroes" (the
      Black people who  work  for  him)  are fine, loyal, wise, simple,
      beautiful, intelligent, and somewhat magical. Most of the text is
      desciptions of  the ways in which they work, and the dailect runs
      thicker than Faulkner. Yet  Sun  Ra apparently loved  this  book.
      I've only skimmed it  so far, but my guess is that Sun Ra saw  in
      the  quasi-"noble  savage" characterization  his  own  ideal  for
      humanity and  the Black Race. The loyalty given the White "owner"
      and author he somehow must have translated to the loyalty he felt
      people owed  the Creator, and  which  he expected from  his  band
      members.
         The  poem  "Of  the Cosmic Blueprints" seems relevant here. It
      hints that slavery was not in itself bad, but was  a training and
      preparation for  the  Black  race  for relations with  the Cosmic
