thanks for the responses so far--they are interesting and useful.

i think i might misspoken a little in the question i posed: i am not trying to say that if you take coltrane around 1958 then add gilmore and ornette, you get the later work--i am merely trying to set up the parameters for something like a conversation between these players, and to use this to pose more vexing problems of thinking about the recorded trail a musician might leave behind in terms of influences.

there is a tendency in thinking in terms of history to flatten everything you touch into context, as if that context can provide a complete or exhuastive account of what a player or group of players might generate. i am not doing this...one assumption that makes me a bit of an anomaly in doing history (which is what i do for a living) is that i treat contexts in a varied, complex manner and do not at every point attribute the same kind of explanatory weight to them.

so i am not making a causal argument. setting up a conversation, the parameters of a conversation rather, is not to impute particular outcomes. they are not predictive, no more in real time than retroactively.

one other element: i organized the class around networks rather than chronologically in any strict sense. it suits the organization of the class at this point that i be able to introduce the arkestra into the mix as we are going to land squarely on them shortly.

but yes--thanks so far, folks...more information appreacited as well.
