Hi, Steve. I believe you're the administrator / moderator for this list. Can you please exile the person posting the viagra links? There have been several such posts in the last week or so. Thank you. << > ><> > >

Margaret,
I do some of the admin on this list - the person pushing these
messages out had subscribed at least 6 email addresses, which are now
restricted/blocked.
I think we do need Steve to look at this. (We need to make sure that
this blocking is really working.)

As best as I can tell from looking at the system logs the spam that came through this morning came originally from an account created on the website rather than the mailing list. That account has been blocked from the website in addition to the blocking that Christopher did.
I'm moving this thread to the Community Feedback forum (which doesn't get forwarded to the list but which is available for any listmembers to read and reply to at http://outerspaceways.info/forums/community-feedback ) so that we can have some more in-depth conversation about spam and how to address it.
One thing troubling me is that unless Christopher deleted the web posting of this morning's viagra post, the spam filter for the website appears to have worked correctly to block the spam from posting on the forum, but did not stop it from coming through by email.
I'm also concerned because Margaret, you said that you've received several this week. Looking back through both the forum posts and the mails I see three, all in the last 36 hours. Have I missed some?
I have some ideas about how to best move forward, but they involve change, and I know no one likes change.
In general, I'd like to take a step more in the direction of this being a Web-based forum with email features and away from being a mailing list with web features. We'd still keep the email posting address alive, of course, but we would lose the whole Mailman system. Digests would work differently, but probably would be more reliable.
I invite anyone with opinions about the future of the list to come to the Community Feedback forum and continue this discussion. I don't want to make unilateral changes and I am committed to keeping this great list alive. I know that I've neglected things somewhat over the last year and I apologize for that but you also have to understand that my priority projects involve paying my rent and keeping my paying clients happy. This is a labor of love and that means that my attention is sporadic.
Thanks,
Steve

No, I did not delete any postings, I just tried to require moderation
for any new postings from those account for future posts.
Best regards,
Chris

It's likely that your computer (or some computer that you've used) has
been infected with a virus or some other malware. The virus (or
whatever) captured your account credentials and then did its thing.
This is actually pretty common, but I don't recall seeing it on the
Saturn list until now.
Did you use a public terminal, such as a computer in a library or
school, by any chance? This happened to my wife and it took over her
Yahoo email.

apparently the drug peddler hooked his / her sales pitches onto earlier existing
Emails on the listserv and used them to reply to. (S)he did the same thing
with a couple of other Emails also on the listserv. According to Chris
Trent, "the person pushing
these messages out had subscribed at least 6 email addresses, which are now
restricted/blocked." Nobody is blaming you for this in
any way, and there is no reason why you would be blocked unless any of those
Email addresses was yours.
