Various Artists =96 Two Zombies Later: Strange and unusual music from = the Exotica Mailing List
international 2CD comp (Comfort Stand Records 001), 2003 exclusive = online release limited to 3 months (01.11.03 =96 01.02.04) access to free = download (mp3 files, cover art, labels, artist info): http://www.comfortstand.com/catalog/001/index.html
July 2003, Otis Fodder (known for his 365 Days Project) announced his = idea to gather the creative potential of musically active members of the = "Exotica Mailing List" and produce a compilation in MP3 format, free to all interested. The concept received an enthusiastic response. By October, = 31 sensational tracks had been collected. It was decided to publish a = double CD, the first release on Fodder's newly founded online label, Comfort = Stand.
Managing a project of this scope is normally hectic and prolonged. In contrast, the four month birth of "Two Zombies Later" was unprecedented. Noteworthy also is its stance regarding current copyright controversies. Without batting a sound file, all artists involved (an international = group hailing from the USA, Canada, Australia, Germany, Japan, the = Netherlands, Italy, Sweden, and Venus) agreed to give their work to the public = without restriction of duplication rights or expectation of compensation. Illustrious contributors include Brother Cleve (Combustible Edison keyboardist and Esquivel prot=E9g=E9), Dana Countryman (creator of Cool = & Strange Music magazine), Der Plan (80s underground pop innovators, = recently reformed), Don Tiki (Hawaii based heirs to the original Exotica sound = and Martin Denny prot=E9g=E9s), Skip Heller (Yma Sumac sideman and Les = Baxter prot=E9g=E9), Marco Kalnenek (webmaster of Weirdomusic.com) and Tipsy = (masters of looping/sampling/recycling the aforementioned Exotica masters to = produce a surreal new music).
Common to all contributors is a passion for =93Exotica,=94 a musical = style originating in the US during the =9150s and =9160s, hinting at primitive promiscuity. Prominent composers/arrangers Martin Denny, Les Baxter, and Arthur Lyman (among others) injected a tropical flavor into instrumental popular music, enticing listeners to embark on musical journeys to = enchanted islands via their hi-fi sets. Tangentially, and often lumped in with =93Exotica=94 composers, =93Space Age Bachelor Pad Music=94 (a.k.a. = Space Age Pop) pioneers such as Juan Garcia Esquivel exploited dramatic musical = dynamics, stereo panning, and ground breaking orchestration, while the likes of Jean-Jacques Perrey and Gershon Kingsley added the latest electronic = musical instruments, such as the Moog synthesizer, to the mix - a new music of overwhelming energy and intrigue, presumed soundtracks for seduction?
The compilation title, =93Two Zombies Later=94 might be interpreted as = the psychedelic state of mind achieved while imbibing the classic Tiki = culture cocktail of the same name. Regardless, this double CD represents the premiere comprehensive view of a scene that offers the potential to = infuse contemporary popular music trends with refreshingly glamorous vibes. = Exotica has evolved. 21st century musicians in the know are discarding boundaries/taboos with more than just a little touch of decadence. Hi-fi embraces lo-fi. Acoustic instruments interplay with synthesizers. = Computers play with live musicians. Composing blurs with remixing.
Unlike =93Industry=94 musicians, who churn out low common denominator = product after product, some of the =93Exotica=94 artists represented here took = up to 20 years to release one of their many tracks. Links to the artists' pages = and their respective websites reveal the remarkable variety of musical backgrounds and leanings represented =96 truly a dazzling = =93exotikaleidoscope=94 of ambient/isolationism via drum and bass, easy listening, electro, industrial, jazz, remixing, new wave, pop, film scoring, space rock, = surf, techno, turntablism, world beat, and more.
Two Zombies Later artists have collaborated with the following = acknowledged musicians: Acid Mother Temple, The All Good Funk Alliance, Dave Alvin, = Jon Appleton, Eugene Chadbourne, Combustible Edison, Nicola Conte, Martin = Denny, DNA, Juan Garcia Esquivel, Fantastic Plastic Machine, Crystal Gayle, = Gentle People, Bebel Gilberto, Glitch, Lalo Guerrero, Richie Hawtin, The International Terrorist Network, Karminsky Experience, The Looney Tunes, = The Mars Volta, Katy Moffatt, Morgoth, Markus Nikolai, Jean-Jacques Perrey, Pizzicato Five, Frank Popp, Peter Principle, Stan Ridgway, Royal Trux, = Yma Sumac, Peter Thomas, Ursula 1000, Weird "Al" Yankowic, The Yeah Yeah = Yeahs, Otomo Yoshihide, 10-Speed Guillotine, and other.
