Chicago, New York, and Philadelphia move over; there are apparently some people in Detroit who feel they can claim Sun Ra as a native son, too. Our man Damian wrote in with warm wishes to Tani Tabbal & attributed the report to the list about Tani's recent medical problems to Mike Bacidore. Actually, the report to the list about this came from me. I'm just mentioning that because if there's anything in it that makes anybody mad, I wouldn't want Mike to take the blame.

Now, about Sun Ra & others being in a Detroit mural at the Whitney Museum & said mural being written about by an art critic at "Time Out New York," first I'd like to point out that Detroit, which has produced master musicians such as Kenny Burrell, Donald Byrd, Tommy Flanagan, Curtis Fuller, Slim Gaillard, Sir Roland Hanna, Barry Harris, Louis Hayes, Lucky Thompson, & many others (while Pontiac, Michigan gave us the mighty Elvin, Hank, & Thad Jones), has no need to lay claim to musicians from elsewhere. (I might add that I also love the young Detroit drummer Gerald Cleaver, who will find his place right up there with the rest, I believe.)

In all, I think we're dealing with three musically ignorant forces here: the muralists from Detroit, who apparently don't know who are the Detroit musicians to celebrate in such a mural; the Whitney Museum curator(s); & the art critic from "Time Out New York." Egg on all their faces, & back to school with 'em!

Anyone who has the time & energy might want to look for a Web site for the group Destroy All Monsters, try to find an Email address or two there, check the Whitney's site for the show curator's Email address, do the masthead thing with "Time Out New York," & educate them all via copies of some of this correspondence.
