In Order to Survive at KF Fest

William Parker and his "In Order to Survive" group performed a set of music at the Knitting Factory's What is Jazz Fest that invoked the spirit of Ra in a way that the Krewe (my apologies, don't crucify me!) could only imagine. The beauty of it all, is that this invocation was not at all intentional (or was it) but rather an outcome of some highly spirited rhythms, blowing, and dance.

This was an expanded edition of the group with three dancers, four percussionists, (Susie Ibarra-drums, Dennis Charles-pc, Michael Wemberly-pc, and a vibraphonist), Cooper Moore on piano, and a four horn team of Rob Brown-alto sax, Assif Tsahar-tenor sax, Chris Jonas- soprano sax, and Roy Campbell-trumpet. and of course Parker on bass.

The music was a 50 minute piece that worked off of a 6/4 rhythm, and is a work in progress entitled, "Mass for the Healing of the World". It was a riff (Like Ra's) that sang in my head for hours after the performance. I was actually singing this as I walked down Fulton street headed for the subway.

What was most striking was the percussive work, along with the rock solid bass of Parker, and a very percussive piano of Cooper Moore which laid down an intense rhythm that rarely let up. The horn players worked off of this, supporting each other as a unit, and also as accompanists, where one soloist would be joined by the rest of the horns gradually, until the music built to a climax, bringing that section to a close. Roy Campbell and Rob Brown were particularly fired. It was one of the highlights of a great fest.
