Thanks Chris! You state my position well, except I'd like to add that I have also heard many private tapes from the late years which confirm my impression of most of the late lp's/CD's. I should also make it known that there are a FEW tracks here & there on later recordings that knock me out, and some solos (especially by Gilmore & Ra) that are substantial. But, compare most of Ra from the '60's & '70's to most Ra from the late 1980's; the depth of content declines extremely notably and noticeably, and not just due to the emphasis on standards.... This was hard to come to terms with as it was happening! My main concern teaching jazz history and turning people on to Ra, is that the late stuff, and a few widely distributed weaker albums from earlier, are what is mostly available (except for the Evidence reissues of substantial earlier material).

Still, I'd rather hear late Ra than anything else I can think of recorded in the same time period (most of the 1980's)! Jazz, as an art form, went into a decline, to my ears; not just Ra & the Arkestra....

For the beginner, I would summarize Ra's output as:

1950's: developing, with most material of great interest 1960's - early 1980's: peaking, with very few "lemons" 1980's - end: declining, as the decade progressed; few "masterpieces"
