Bill Shute has recommended that I write to the list one more time on this topic, and then move the discussion to private e-mail. I think we all agree that a pressing of What's New is both desirable and possible, the main problems being liscensing issues, remuneration of investments, and distribution of royalties and profits. It seems that I have been delagated the task or have put myself in the position of organizing the collecting, bidding, pressing and other administrative tasks relating to this project. If no one objects, or unless someone has a strong desire to take over project, I'll act for now as coordinator. First is the estimation of cost. Let's aim high and guess at $700 for 300 records on good vinyl with lables and jackets. It should not be too much more (By the way, do we want Saturn copy lables or something esle on these records?). $1000 for the metal parts. Maybe more if word gets around that we're planning this (i.e. keep it between us for now). Purchasers can pay for shipping, which is standard. I have no idea what liscensing will cost if we do it. Let's estimate $1000. That brings the total cost between $1700-$3000 or so. Second, the number of people in the Saturn bidding pool. Right now I have about 13 people who have said they would contribute (B. Shute, B. Cornell, J. Wolf, C. Trent, A. Rogers, R. Campbell, W. Oller, G. Shirley, J. Jennings, F. Maas, J. Moudry, M. Greenaway, G. Hsiao (who hasn't spoken up yet, but I know he will, right Gilbert?)). To put it bluntly, we need more people. Not all of us can put up $150-200. Some may be limited to $25 or $50. I am soon to be in much more difficult financial circumstances (My wife and I are adopting our nephew, and it ain't cheap). So the more people we get, the less each needs to put up. And of course repayment of investment can be worked out. On that subject, I mentioned making $4500-6000 gross from the sales. Contributers can be payed back in vinyl and\or cash. The Arkestra can be given or sold cheap copies to sell at concerts, or they can just receive the profits. Liscensing would take a big chunk out of those profits, around half I would guess (but again I know nothing about this). My point is, if we can make this happen, no one will lose their shirt, many will have a record they've wanted, and some people connected to Sun Ra will make a little money. Not a bad deal. So what I need now are more commitments. People not on the list are welcome of course. Also I need suggestions on how to proceed on the legal side of things. Shall I contact the family?
