saturnids, i find nods to sun ra in some unexpected places. i suppose the latest one, as the closing "thank you" on the (ec) nudes (amy denio, wadi gysi, and chris cutler) cd "vanishing point" cd (cuneiform/ rer), is not that unusual, considering amy denio's "tongues" and quirky all-overness. and cutler's days in henry cow. i'm not trying to be incisive here, just thinking, but i wonder if anyone has thoughts on the relationship between the sorts of post-punk "free" players like (ec) nudes and what john corbett refers to as sun ra's use of space as a "platform for playful subversion." that could be a slight misquote, but it appears in corbett's useful piece on sun ra, lee perry, and george clinton in "Extended play"(Duke U. Press, 1994), jc's first book. it seems inevitable that sun ra will become a cornerstone for the sort of performative theorizing that has so marked african american literature and will thus be more than just an example of "playful subversion" of the notion of identity as singularity so prevalent in modern times. in any case, for a nod to sun ra and some fine music in and out of numerous "traditions," check out the new (ec) nudes disc. andy bartlett
