Thanks to Charles Blass and Chris Trent, I've been able to hear another, previously unreleased Saturn doowop performance. This one's backed by the Arkestra, not just Sunny or a trio. And it's later than any other known Saturn doowop.

Personnel: unknown doowop quartet (The Cosmic Rays? The Equallos?); Sun Ra (Wurlitzer ep); E. J. Turner (tp); Marshall Allen (fl); James Spaulding (as); John Gilmore (ts); Ronnie Boykins (b); Robert Barry (d); Jim Herndon (perc); Pat Patrick (space lute).

There's a rumor in doowop circles that Sun Ra had some connection with a vocal group called the Equallos (or Little Prince and the Freeloves) who cut two 45s (one of the titles was "Beneath the Sun") for an obscure Chicago label called M and M. Since M and M was run by Tommy "Madman" Jones (a popular bar-walking tenor saxophonist; some Arkestra members worked with him, but there's no known connection between him and Ra) and The Equallos recorded in 1958, I was skeptical about the Ra connection. A 1958 doowop with the Arkestra changes all of that.

I'll encourage Jerry Gordon to include "Black Sky and Blue Moon" in the Saturn singles collection. It's not the world's greatest recording job but it's no worse than the items on The Nubians of Plutonia. The M and Ms are so rare that they bring as much as $5000 from doowop collectors, but Val Shively (famous doowop expert in the Philadelphia area) seems to have them.
