Critics

There's a long tradition of sniping amongst UK jazz critics; to my knowledge there have been outbreaks sporadically over the last 30 years, involving some of the most respected critics . Sometimes they amount to defences of strongly held critical opinions, sometimes they degenerate into personal vilification. They usually don't last long and could be seen as similar to the flame-wars which occasionally affect e-mail discussion lists.

As for Voce, he's no twit. His regular column in JJI is full of anecdote and information, and whilst I wouldn't share all his value judgments he has a very long experience of the music on which to make them. He writes most of the obituaries for the quality national newspaper, The Independent, and occasionally broadcasts on national radio, and regularly on the local Liverpool station.
