Re: Futuristic Sounds in stereo???

Ihor,

i finally gave "the futuristic sounds of sun ra" a listen. i had held off getting it, because on the back cover of the cd, it plainly says MONAURAL. however, my cd is in stereo. sure, it's not a great mix - everything is either in one channel or the other - but it's stereo! what gives? the cd that i have is on savoy jazz sv-0213 and had the 'remastered by denon' insert. is that what the 'remastering' did - make a 'stereo' out of the mono?

I've never heard of a stereo copy on vinyl, but both the CD issues (the one you mention plus "We Are In The Future") have been, as you say, in stereo. The CDs both have an extreme stereo separation that I associate with early 1960s LPs - all the instruments appear to come from one speaker or the other, with none in the centre of the stereo image. So maybe the master tape has only two channels. I don't know much about

studio practices at the time, though - any comments on that, anyone?
