Sistas' Place/The Group (Redone) A Tribute to Marion Brown/Sat.
Sistas' Place, 456 Nostrand Avenue at Jefferson Avenue (where Jazz:=C2=A0= A=20 Music of the Spirit Lives and Culture is a Weapon), continues its 16th Se= ason=20 with The Group (Redone), A Tribute to Marion Brown featuring trumpeter=20 Ahmed Abdullah, violinist Billy Bang, drummer Andrew Cyrille along with= =20 Bluiett on baritone sax, Bob Stewart on tuba and pianist D.D. Jackson. = =20 Saturday, December 4th at 9 and 10:30pm =20 This combination of musicians: Abdullah, Bang, Bluiett, Cyrille, Jackson= =20 and Stewart has never been heard before! The special presentation of this= =20 unit is to acknowledge the coming 25th anniversary of the founding of the= =20 original band (1986) and to pay tribute to one of its members (Marion Bro= wn),=20 who just left the planet. =20 Marion Brown was a wonderful human being and a unique creative artist who= =20 played the alto saxophone and flute, was composer, educator, writer and a= =20 visual artist. He held a Master's Degree in Ethnomusicology and came to t= he=20 attention of the world on John Coltrane's landmark recording of 1965,=20 Ascension. The last ensemble he performed with was The Group (1986-1987).= He has=20 left us with many recordings of his own in various contexts and a book of= =20 his memoirs, Recollections. He had two children, one of whom Djinji=20 Brown, will be present to represent. =20 This concert will be a celebration of past, present and most importantly= =20 the future. Like its originators in The Group (which also included Sirone= ,=20 Fred Hopkins, and of course, Marion Brown), all of the current six appear= ing=20 together=C2=A0at Sistas' Place are themselves bandleaders and major figur= es in=20 today's more advanced music.=20 =20 The Group was a great idea for its time, however, The Group (Redone) is= =20 totally in the now and representative of where the music is today and whe= re=20 it must go. However, it takes the artists who have, over the decades,=20 remained the "avant garde" to take us there!=20 =20 Don't Miss This!! =20 Check out the web-site at www.sistasplace.org =20 Coming Events: Saturday, December 11-Dwight West Saturday, December 18-Eddie Allen's Jazzy Brass for the Holidays Saturday, January 8-Vincent Chancey Saturday, January 15-Louis Reyes Rivera with the Salim Washington Quintet Saturday, January 22-A Tribute to Abbey Lincoln featuring James Weidman= =20 with Jay Hoggard Saturday, January 29- Neil Clarke Group Saturday, February-5-Onaje Allen Gumbs Saturday, February 12-TBA Saturday, February 19- A Tribute to Benny Powell featuring TK Blue =20 =20 Call 718 398-1766 for reservations.
