American Jazz Masters Fellowships
The National Endowment for the Arts recognizes the importance of jazz as a truly American art form and seeks to increase awareness of our jazz heritage and encourage its perpetuation.
As part of its efforts to honor, assist, encourage, and present those artists and forms of artistic expression and practice that reflect the many cultural traditions that make up our nation, the Arts Endowment annually awards up to three one-time-only American Jazz Masters Fellowships. These fellowships are for distinguished jazz artists who have made a significant contribution to the art form.
The selection criteria are excellence and significance of the contribution to the jazz art form in the African- American tradition.
This fellowship category is not open to application. Fellowships are awarded to living artists on the basis of nominations from the public including the jazz community. The recipients must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Posthumous fellowships will not be awarded.
Each fellowship award is $2O,OOO.
How to Submit a Nomination
Nominations may be made by submitting a one-page letter that details the reasons that the nominated artist should receive an American Jazz Masters Fellowship. Describe the nominee's contributions and explain why this individual deserves national recognition. Include with your nomination letter a resume or a short biography that outlines the career of the nominated artist.
An individual may submit only one nomination in each round of American Jazz Masters Fellowships. No one may nominate him/herself.
Deadline for Nominations
Nominations must be postmarked no later than January 24, 2OO3. Grant awards will be announced in the fall of 2OO3.
Send your nomination to:

Review of Nominations
Once a nomination has been submitted to the Arts Endowment, it is reviewed by an advisory panel of jazz experts and at least one knowledgeable layperson. Panel recommendations are forwarded to the National Council on the Arts. The Council sends to the Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts those nominations that it recommends for funding. The Chairman reviews the Council's recommendations and makes the final decision on all grant awards.
Nominations remain active for five years. The nominee will be reviewed annually during this period.
