A Quiet Place In The Universe

Saturnites,

Look out for an imminent Sun Ra CD on Leo Records: "A Quiet Place In The Universe", Leo CD LR 198. I just got an advance copy, thanks to some work I did on it for Leo, so it should be around very soon.

This is a concert tape that seems to come from around 1976-7, originating from Sun Ra himself and bought by Leo some years ago. About half of the music is newly released, the rest was previously issued as extra tracks on the CD version of "A Night In East Berlin". In my opinion, the two new pieces completely justify the rerelease of the tape as a whole.

The new pieces are "A Quiet Place In The Universe" and "I Pharaoh". The first of these has never appeared on record before, and the second has a completely different musical backing here to its one and only other appearance on a Saturn LP. Both pieces feature very fine instrumental writing, particularly for the Arkestra's flutes. The remaining pieces make a lot more sense too, in this context, than they did as unexplained extras on "East Berlin".

Details of this concert (also included in Robert Campbell's book "The Earthly Recordings Of Sun Ra"):

suggested personnel: Sun Ra (synth, org, voc), Ahmed Abdullah (tp), prob. Akh Tal Ebah (tp,voc), Vincent Chancey (fr-h), prob. Craig Harris (tb), Marshall Allen (as,picc), Pat Patrick (as), John Gilmore (ts), Elo Omoe (bcl,fl), James Jackson (Ancient Egyptian Infinity drum, bassoon,fl), Danny Thompson (bs,fl), unknown (b), prob. Luqman Ali (dr), prob. Atakatune (cga), prob Eddie Thomas (perc), June Tyson (voc.)
