I'm listening to the Venice solo Cd. There's basically no information on the sleeve, only date, place and titles. The sound is better than I expected, and the music is extraordinary. I am trying to compare with the review that some incompetent wrote for the Italian jazz magazine. There are precious few useful information that I summarize here: 1. Sun Ra played TWICE. It was planned to have two solo concerts, him and Paul Bley; in fact they both shared the evenings of Nov. 24 and 25. 2. The so called review seems to be about the evening of Nov. 25. The scribe could not quote any composition apart from Space Is The Place (because Sun sang it) and Over The Rainbow (he musta have seen the movie). 3. There was someone recording the concert for Sun Ra on stage, so these tapes most probably came from Ra through Geerken (thanked on the cover).

There's no Space is the Place on the Cd, or Cocktail for Two and Over the rainbow (which are on the Venice tape which is around). Music is just below 60', a bit longish for a solo set (we don't know if Bley played first on Nov. 24, Ra played first on the following day).Track 8, Free Improvisation, comes after a salutation, what follows are two over 7' recordings of Honeysuckle Rose and Friendly Galaxy. The CD is not recommended, it's a must buy!

So apparently there's a cluster of recordings there: 1. solo concert on Nov. 24 2. solo concert on Nov. 25 (with Space is the Place and Over the Rainbow). 3. possibly music recorded on purpose, or during rehearsals, to accompany the Sun Ra feature on TV which was less than 30'. (with Cocktails for Two?)

On a related note, Italian master Giorgio Gaslini (whose solo piano tribute to Ayler is fantastic) transcribed dozens of Ra compositions from records, and choose about 12 to record solo on piano. He told me that he felt the strength of the compositions, and Bach pieces creeping in his own solos! The tape doesn't have a final destination yet, but I'll keep you posted.
