The Immeasurable Equation: For anyone in the Edinburgh area or visiting for the festival
"Special exhibition of previously unseen cover art and LP covers and
ephemera from the esoteric, spiritual jazz great Sun Ra and the
Arkestra, shown alongside photographs of the band" Running at the
consistently interesting Summerhall venue (last year they featured Art &
Language archives) from 2nd August to 27th September.
The Summerhall site seems to be down at the moment but info at

Having prowled round the Summerhall labyrinth today, intending to keep
the Ra exhibition for last, when we sought the not-obviously-signposted
Attic Room, we were told it is inaccessible during performances in one
of the connecting spaces. So worth checking first if you are visiting.
For anyone with a fondness for the steampunk alterity of Tesla coils and
the likes, Robbie Thomson's "Ecstatic Arc" in a nearby room may be worth
a look. And round the corner in another part of the Summerhall complex,
Michael Nyman's 10 simultaneous versions of Vertov's "Man with a Movie
Camera" are exhilarating.

The Immeasurable Equation exhibition at Summerhall, Edinburgh
The focus is very much on Jőrg Becker's photos of the Berlin and
Donaueschingen concerts that went into "It's After the End of the
World". Which is where I came in, 38 years ago, my head turned
completely by a cut-out cheap LP. A very similar cut-out from the same
batch is on display. (A few months afterwards, the mass of Impulse LPs
arrived as cut-outs too; how many people's listening to Sun Ra was
nourished from foraging in the bargain bin?)
The exhibition is somewhat less than I was expecting, in all honesty,
but interesting to see more images from these concerts.
There is also a ltd. edition poster on sale (design based on the cover
of the Recommended Records reissue of the Shander LP) ... at 40 pounds a
time.
