Abstract:The Sun Ra/El Saturn Collection recordings date from the
1950s-1993. The materials represent the work of iconoclastic composer
and bandleader Sun Ra. The collection consists of rehearsal tapes,
recordings of live concerts, home recordings of sketches and
experiments, lectures and recitations by Ra of original unpublished
texts, and master tapes of material likely intended for commercial
release.
Quantity:There are approximatly 600 analog tapes of recorded audio in
open reel, cassette, and dat formats.
Note: Both the finding aid and the collection itself are currently to
be considered works in progress. Rather than wait until the entire
collection is processed before making it generally available to
researchers--our usual practice--we have decided to make each series
available as it is completed.

And so the archive lives! I'm sure many of us have wondered what became of all the master tapes. This is heart warming to know now that they were saved.

Sun Ra/El Saturn Collection

Wow, that's a lot of tapes. I was under the impression that John only rescued a few things from the Alton archives, but 600 tapes!!! To think this was all slated for the trash, what were they thinking?

I am curious about how this collection and the collection of Michael Anderson will be handled in the future. I'd hate for two such giants to "compete" against each other (for funding to see proper releases of interesting material for one). Not sure how they overlap either, but as we know, there is not that much of a fan base for Sun Ra, but it would be very nice to see more releases in the future.

"Your brain is simply wired to a nostalgic sense of audio distortion. You hear warmth, you think you hear grandeur, space, subtlety, all these things . . . but actually you're just satisfying an old recording in your brain." -Daniel Richler on vinyl.
