Sun Ra Arkestra with Coleman Lemieux Dance Company Toronto Oct 20

Direct from its triumphant European tour, the Sun Ra Arkestra under the direction of Marshall Allen will continue its 2012 World Tour in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on Saturday, October 20, 2012 with a collaboration featuring the Coleman Lemieux Dance Company. This "Space is the Place" spectacular will be held at the Regent Part Arts and Cultural Centre, 585 Dundas Street East, Toronto (between Sumach and Sackville Streets) between 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm on October 20, 2012.

Bill Coleman’s "Space is the Place" (featuring "Hymn to the Universe") is a free theatrical performance, site-specific event and gathering rolled into one that will bring alive the Regent Park Arts & Cultural Centre with music and dance, and connect the newly opened Centre to its surrounding community.

The Sun Ra Arkestra under the direction of Marshall Allen will be joined by students from the Regent Park School of Music and the artists of Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie. This event will consist of a ‘lobby sound symphony,’ and a special adaptation of Bill Coleman’s celebrated performance Hymn to the Universe, followed by a community gathering.

Choreographer Bill Coleman, best known for his ground-breaking site-specific works, will be joined by eight dancers, including Carol Prieur, voted Female Dancer of the Year by Europe's respected Tanz Magazine, and Andrea Weber of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. Visual design and costumes are by award-winning Métis visual artist Edward Poitras and Toronto fashion icons Hoax Couture designers Jim Searle and Chris Tyrell.

ok, that was easily solved: the kids of the Eighth Street Orchestra came in from school just now, heard the news, and proclaimed that we are going.  We'll figure out how later.  We have 6 days.

anyone know of cheap accommodations for a 6-piece (possibly 7) street-band for next Saturday night?  urbanlivingsuites.com (our usual choice) is booked solid.

My phone proved uncooperative for trying to send dispatches as they happened, but better late than not at all, here's hoping this bit of embedding video will work in an email:

<object width="640" height="480"><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true"></param><param name="movie" value="https://www.facebook.com/v/10151127890833722"></param><embed src="https://www.facebook.com/v/10151127890833722" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="1" width="640" height="480"></embed></object>

if not perhaps this link: https://www.facebook.com/v/10151127890833722 and some pictures attached assuming attachments work with this list ;)

the short story is it was out of this world :) the performance space itself was fantastic, to see the Arkestra entrance with the kids of the Regent Park Music School into a hall full of families, just one big happy joyous gift to the Universe, this was the stuff of warm chills (all the kids had a blast) and to have the opportunity to take my own kids, even the 7 year old, to see the Arkestra play and meet the musicians and dancers, that was nothing short of a papa's dream come true -- thanks so much to Marshall and Coleman and everyone who helped put this show together!
