Invisible Shield hybrid at Dusty Groove
Invisible Shield hybrid at Dusty Groove
Hello people of Saturn,
I had been watching this album at Dusty Groove for a week or more, waiting for pay day to pick it up. When I read the post here, I figured that if I really wanted it, I'd better get off the pot and pay.
The record arrived a couple of days ago and I have to say, it is a pretty remarkable album. One side, as the Dusty Groove bit mentions, is from The Invisible Shield but I can't find the other side listed in Campbell/Trent.
The record has a purple Saturn label with the Morton St. Philadelphia
address at the bottom. On the left side, it has P(with the circle
around it) 1973. The labels are marked on Side A as 143000 and on Side B
as 144000. The dead wax just outside the label is marked on Side A as
B144000 and on Side B as 143000B.
Things gets a bit confusing because I think the labels may have been applied to the opposite sides from where they should have been. Side A is titled "THE SATELLITES ARE OUTERSPACEWAYS INC" and is divided into three tracks: Island in the Sun, Invisible Shield, and Janus. On the label for Side B, the three tracks from The Invisible Shield (above) are listed but the side is only divided into two tracks. I don't recognize these recordings.
Side B is divided into two tracks but seems to be several performances edited together (maybe 8). The first begins with The Satellites are Spinning (vocal by JT) and segues into a solo piano piece followed by Outerspaceways Inc and finishes with an (unknown to me) swing number performed by the Arkestra. The 2nd track begins with a composition I don't recognize followed by a nearly 6 minute drum/percussion section, and ending with a short improv/composition (again, I'm not familiar), and finally, We Travel the Spaceways.
Can anyone help me identify the non-Invisible Shield tracks? You can download the side here in mp3 if you'd like to give it a listen.
Any help, of course, will be Greatly Appreciated!
Thanks,
-john
Speaking of the discography, there is a hybrid out there, for sale at Dusty
Groove at the moment, and it doesn't seem to be listed on the disco. One side
is obviously from 'The Invisible Shield', but the other side does not match
up with this description.
Sun Ra — Satellites Are Outerspaceways Inc ... LP [1]
Saturn, Early 60s/1970. Very Good .... *$79.99*
A confusing mix of material, but with some great moments! One side of this
set – the tracks "Island In The Sun", "Invisible Shield", and "Janus" –
seem to have been recorded around 1970. "Island In The Sun" has a slow
bass-heavy groove that's really compelling, and very spare. "Janus" has some
great production, and lots of weird echoey bits! *The other side features 2
noisier tracks under the "Satellites" title – both pretty spare, with lots
of free piano from Ra.*(Purple label, Philly address, in a plain white
sleeve.)Anyone know what the other side consists of.

Hey John
The hybrid version of The Invisible Shield that you have is
documented in "The Earthly Recordings of Sun Ra".
Side A: 144000B (Island in the Sun etc.) side B: 143000B contains
tracks from the B side of Outerspaceways Inc.
When Outer Spaceways Incorporated was released on CD in the Calling
Planet Earth 3-CD box set for some reason that makes no sense they
titled that CD Spaceways. Especially since another CD in the same
box set IS titled Outer Spaceways Incorporated but is actually
material from a 12/5/71 show in Denmark that was sold to Black Lion
Records and never released by them.
Maybe by now someone else has chimed in with more detailed information.

Thanks guys!
Stephen, you're absolutely right. I don't know why I skipped over those pages initially but there it is - all spelled out.
It's been awhile, but I have listened to that 3-CD set many times and had forgotten how much great music is there.
Thanks again,
-john
