Re: Pink Floyd and Sun Ra

Robert Pleshar rpleshar@MIDWAY.UCHICAGO.EDU asked:

I'm just curious as to how Pink Floyd members would have gotten a hold of Saturn records in England. Were any of them readily available even in the states at that time (1966-8)? I suppose they could have obtained the ESPs fairly easily, though. Anyone know the state of overseas distribution at that time?

A friend who was playing free jazz-towards free improv. in the mid.60s told me how influential the incoming ESPs like New York Art Quartet and the sparseness of the Heliocentric Worlds was on him. He was shocked when the Arkestra eventually came to London and he saw the extent to which Ra directed who played when, which somehow hadn't been expected...

I did once ask Eddie Prevost about the extent of the crossplay between AMM and the early Pink Floyd, but he wasn't very forthcoming; the influence in that direction probably isn't very interesting/important from his viewpoint.

A UK fan writes ......

I bought a copy of "Fate in a pleasant Mood" in London in 67/68. It was from Dave Carey's Swing Shop. I'm sure he had other Saturns as well. I believe he bought them in USA and brought them back here.
