The Hinds Brothers questions

I can't address all of the complaints about the Hinds brothers, as I have had no trouble personally when ordering their publications. In my experience, they are sincere fans who have gone to great lengths to document Ra's work; I have learned a lot from the photos and interviews in their quarterly publication. They have not allowed their concert audio and videotapes to circulate--the Arkestra should be pleased with that policy.

I can address two other issues.

1) The transcriptions in their published interviews aren't too bad (though I wish they wouldn't print them in all caps). It is extremely difficult to get completely accurate interview transcriptions, even if the sound quality is consistently good and you know what is being talked about. (In one of my previous jobs, I had to hire temps to transcribe tapes of people thinking out loud while using experimental computer software. A few of the temps were great at this; most couldn't do it worth beans, even if they were otherwise adept at secretarial work.) I went back through the Patty Waters interview three times (and asked Patty to read the transcript once) before I got all the garbles fixed. And I taped off the telephone, not in a noisy club. The Hinds brothers could sometimes do better with people's names in the interviews, but then they may not always realize (or remember) who it was that Sunny was talking about. Check out some other published interviews with the Ra--many contain almost comical mistakes.

2) The Hinds brothers should be paying the band something on the Immeasurable Equation sales. But what are their sales figures to begin with? Let me also note that before the Hinds brothers took up the Immeasurable Equation, it was published by Alton Abraham. And I doubt that Alton was putting a whole lot of money into Sunny's coffers from that source...
