I saw them doing a soundcheck on Saturday morning outdoors to a very
surprised crowd in preparation for their set later that day opening the
Melbourne International jazz festival. Later they came on and played a
great 40 minute or so set to a big crowd. As it was free, there were quite a
few children dancing. My five year old said of Marshall Allen, he looks like
a king. On Sunday night they played at the Forum, which is a big old theatre
with Roman statues and a blue sky. They played two sets of classics one
would expect. Marshall Allen stood the whole two sets and conducted and
played with energy. That weekend they also played two sold out gigs at the
Kelvin club as well as a Masterclass. Amazing.
