Soul Vibrations Of Man
Reissued by whom?
I bought the original from Danny Thompson at Morton Street in 1978. As a Swedish sports writer I was in NY to cover hockey and tennis, rented a car to go to Philadelphia to visit Pharoah´s Den and buy all the records I could get. This was one.
I remember that Danny and a guitarist named Harry (?) were very impressed that I was going to New Orleans to cover the Ali vs Spinks fight (Ali took the title for the 3d time).
I bought all the LP´s that I didn´t have already and Danny found one on my own list over what I had that he hadn´t heard himself at the time (live at Gibus). It ended with him owing me four records, he had no change, that I should have later in Sweden through Tom Hunter. That never happened, but what the hell. They were 5 dollars each.
I was offered a chance to get my own Sun Ra record, meeting the master and talk to him, afterwards he would record something only for me. I didn´t have the 100 dollars at the time and I still regret it.
Thanks to Danny, in the evening I listened to an Arkestra concert in Bryn Mawr, Philadelphia. I was there three hours before the place opened, to be sure. Well into the concert there were more people in the band (maybe 8-10, as I remember) than in the audience.
I posted a postcard to my brother, also a Sun Ra addict, with mr Ra´s autograph.
I drove back to NY with a smile on my face.

Now that's a great story! Thanks for this. The Soul Vibrations album
seems to have been reissued by the Saturn label on a 180 gr vinyl.

Soul Vibrations Of Man
There have been "Saturn label" vinyl reissues
available for close to ten years now. Not sure if
anyone ever figured out where they come from or
if they are official in any way. Usually quite a
few on Ebay selling for cheap. This is the first
"new" one I can remember seeing in a while. The
Art Yard Saturn vinyl reissues I have usually
feature new cover and interior art and seem to be
as official as official gets in the post-Sun Ra
era.
Nice story Berglund, thanks for sharing.
I used to make bi-weekly runs to J&R's Music
World Jazz store in the early 80s (in New York
City). This was during the period that Rounder
was distributing the Saturn LPs. Danny Davis was
working at J&R's at the time and it was always an
added bonus to get to speak with a member of the
Arkestra someplace other than a gig. When the
Rounder deal dried up it became much harder to
find any Saturn product outside of an Arkestra
show.

Soul Vibrations Of Man
Aren't these duplicate Saturn vinyl reissues anything to do with Evidence.
I'm happy for this reissue as I never got a cover with my old copy. Just hope it's legit.

Except, Evidence never issued Night of the Purple Moon, My Brother the Wind, Strange Strings, or Soul Vibrations of Man on cd. When these first came out, I bought Purple and Strange, but never bothered with the others because I had them on cd already. I've never gotten a straight answer about who exactly is making these, and the easiest way to tell if these are taken from the Evidence cds, is to check some of the titles where the original Saturn tracks were edited, but the full version appears on the cd. I would love it is Soul came to cd, because I'm sure there are some bonus tracks worth putting along side it. Also, there seems to be a bootleg of Unity coming out soon, on two seperate coloured vinyl issues.
"Your brain is simply wired to a nostalgic sense of audio distortion. You hear warmth, you think you hear grandeur, space, subtlety, all these things . . . but actually you're just satisfying an old recording in your brain." -Daniel Richler on vinyl.
Soul Vibrations Of Man
This might be the label reissuing the Saturn vinyls:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Saturn_Records
If this is the label it seems quite legal.
