Sun Ra on Virgin Atlantic Airlines Inflight Music Channel

I heard from Scott Robinson, who appreciates and understands Sun Ra's music at a very complex and deep level, that a jazz friend of his heard the following Sun Ra selections on an inflight music channel of a Virgin America flight into San Francisco this month:

1.  Enlightenment from Concert for The Comet Kohoutek
2.  The Shadow World from Nothing Is
3.  Exotic Forest from Nothing Is
4.  Heliocentric from Heliocentric Worlds
5.  The Cosmos from Heliocentric Worlds
6.  The Sun Myth from Heliocentric Worlds

So, it looks like you can travel the spaceways with Virgin America and catch some serious Sun Ra sounds this month.  Also, Scott's friend mentioned that there is an amazing collage of saxophones at the A2 Gate for Virgin America at the San Francisco Airport.  There apparently are around 100 saxophones on the wall in that collage.

For those of you who might not be aware of Scott Robinson, he organized a group with himself on multiple saxophones, theremin, & bass marimba (the actual one used by Sun Ra on the Heliocentric Worlds Volume 1 ESP album), Jules Thayer on bass, and Pheeroan Aklaff on drums for a  concert of Sun Ra music at the old Knitting Factory in NYC after Sun Ra left the planet, which to this day - to my ear - is the best representation of Sun Ra's music that has ever been performed by musicians outside of the Arkestra.  Scott has also recorded a CD with Marshall Allen titled "Live at Space Farms" on his ScienSonic label - a very interesting recording featuring Scott Robinson, Marshall Allen, Pat O'Leary & Kevin Norton.

Sun Ra on Virgin Atlantic Airlines Inflight Music Channel

Thanks Greg!

>Scott Robinson
I love it that Sun Ra is being played on Virgin Airlines and am very interested in more info about Robinson's music.  Do you know if there is a recording floating around of the Knitting Factory show you mention?  I'd love to hear it.  I'm glad to know of the 'Live at Space Farms' cd, too.  I hope I can find it for sale somewhere.

On a related note, I read this morning that 'Call For All Demons' from 'Jazz by Sun Ra' is now on 'Jazz: The Smithsonian Collection' (formerly called The Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz).

The only person known to have a recording of Scott Robinson's old Knitting Factory Sun Ra show that I know of is Scott himself.  Scott has informed me that the "Live at Space Farms" CD is available for sale at:

Also, Scott clarified that the bass marimba that he has was also used by Sun Ra on the Magic City Saturn album.  You can find more information about Scott Robinson's music at:

Thank you, Greg!

I found it on CDBaby this morning and almost ordered but I wanted to wait and find out if Scott was selling them himself.
