SPAM in outer space

You've probably by now seen the spam messages that were posted to the Saturn Discussion.

The user that sent those messages has been unsubscribed from the mailing list and blocked from the website. I've also added some stronger filtering that should catch obvious spam like that.

However, as is the case with any "stronger" measures, there is a risk that legitimate messages might not be published. If this happens to you, don't hesitate to email me directly or send me a private message on the forum.

Thanks for your understanding. I know we all want spam to be blown out the airlock.

a suggestion, if i may? on a google group that i am on, one member's
email addy has been grabbed by some spammer and that spammer started
sending spam with that members email addy to the group. as a
moderator, i was able to change that member's settings so that all
posting from them are moderated - meaning that i get an email
notification telling me they have a pending message. i can then okay
the legit message and block the spams. it is bit more work on my
part, as moderator, but it keeps spam off the list. it also keeps that
member subscibed and receiving group emails, etc.

i don't know if our present list has those, or similar, options?
something like moderating a spamming member may be less severe than
banning a member?

Thanks, and yes. I looked at the account of the member in question and that member's account had been created just eight days ago and had not posted to Saturn except for those two spams.

If I had seen spam coming from a member that had been on the list since before the transfer to the new server, or who had made non-spam postings in the past I would have just set the moderate flag on that user.

Fortunately it seems to be an infrequent enough instance (because we require email verification in order to become part of the Saturn Discussion and have Mollom installed on the website side of things) that each instance can be handled on a case-by-case basis.

subscribing just to send spam? yikes!

banning them was the right course of action.
